FANGORIA x MONSTER FEST 2019 Melbourne Final Wave Programming

With a mere month to go before FANGORIA x MONSTER FEST PART VIII: MONSTER TAKES MELBOURNE kicks off, we’re pleased to reveal not only our final wave of films but the news that we’re extending the festival out a further four nights to accomodate our biggest MONSTER FEST program yet!

Weddings are often wrought with family politics but rarely does a wedding night result in an all-out war and in our Closing Night Film, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett‘s READY OR NOT, that’s exactly what Grace (Samara Weaving) gets when a seemingly innocuous game of hide-and-go-seek turns into kill or be killed.
Based off the beloved short story by H.P. Lovecraft, Richard Stanley returns with his first narrative feature in over two decades, COLOR OUT OF SPACE, the story of a family at odds with a meteorite that mutates anything it comes into contact with, featuring a suitably manic performance by cinematic titan Nicolas Cage.
Get comfy as you’ll be in be in for the long haul with David Weiner‘s epic and definitive documentary on the decade of film that shaped modern genre cinema with IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS: A JOURNEY INTO ICONIC ’80s HORROR, a critical and insiders perspective with interviews from the household names of horror. Following the screening, ticket holders are exclusively invited to participate in our Minotaur Presents MONSTER FES-TRIVIA and this year we’re testing your ’80s horror knowledge!

David Gregory‘s riveting documentary BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON is equal measures career biography and true crime story of the life and untimely demise of the notorious low budget exploitation filmmaker Al Adamson.

From eleven female voices in Australian horror comes DARK WHISPERS VOLUME 1, an anthology horror comprised of ten tales bound together with an overarching story of a young woman who inherits her mother’s Book of Dark Whispers.
Australia’s answer to THE HILLS HAVE EYES has arrived with Stuart Stanton‘s NO SUCH THING AS MONSTERS, where a young couple’s weekend getaway to the bush becomes a nightmarish game of cat and mouse with a twisted group of individuals known as ‘the family’.
Upon its theatrical release in 1974, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE was a global box office disaster…in all but one city, Winnipeg, Canada. Malcolm Ingram‘s documentary PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG is a heartfelt and inspirational tale of that isolated community who bonded over their passion for the unsung masterpiece and helped shape its enduring legacy.

After watching the lovingly crafted PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG, you will give your soul to revisit Brian De Palma‘s PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE and FANGORIA x MONSTER FEST are enabling this with a 45th Anniversary screening of arguably the greatest tale of the man who gave it all for rock n’ roll.
When a music video shoot on the seemingly tranquil Lake Infinity fast turns to bloodshed it can only mean one thing…pure homegrown hilarity and quite possibly the most quotable film in (shot-on-video) cinematic history! Step aboard Ollie Martin‘s HOUSEBOAT HORROR as FANGORIA x MONSTER FEST celebrates the 30th Anniversary of this undisputed underdog of Australian cinema with a rare big screen showing followed by a cast and crew reunion Q&A…you’ll bar up!

Filmmakers in peril once more only this time as they attempt to complete a cursed film in the Australian slasher classic CUT, starring queen of pop Kylie Minogue and eighties teen sweetheart Molly Ringwald, presented in the World Premiere of an all-new 4K Restoration with director Kimble Rendall in attendance!
Stewart Raffill‘s 1994 feature TAMMY AND THE T-REX is equal measures love story, creature-feature, mad scientist flick, screwball comedy and all out insane as the brain of a murdered teenager is transplanted into a Tyrannosaurus. Starring Denise Richards & Paul Walker, this cinematic oddity is presented in an all-new 4K Restoration of a previously unreleased and gloriously gore-soaked cut for your discerning pleasure!

Murder City’s Trash peddler, Dick Dale returns to Melbourne with a sordid selection of the sickest, gnarliest and funniest short films from the around the darkest corners of the planet with an all-new TRASAHRAMA program.

Terrifying, hilarious and brazenly weird, ATTACK OF THE KILLER SHORTS is a program of horror and hybrid-genre shorts featuring stories of asparagus tips, haunted shits and cybernetic tricks.

From the depth of the darkest shadow to the furthest reaches of the beyond, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES is a program of horror shorts that exist to terrify and revel in your excruciating torment.

AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL is an annual showcase of student shorts from film schools around Australia, featuring the work of current students and 2018 graduates.

TONIGHT ON A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE is a lecture presentation by writer/historian Lee Gambin where he will discuss the television phenomenon known as the ‘Very Special Episode’ – a trope in the history of American sitcoms where comedic episodic programs suddenly “got serious” and discussed varied topics ranging from rape, drug use, eating disorders, abortion, shoplifting, race issues, coming out and beyond!

BEHIND THE SCREEN is a panel discussion with Australian film practitioners Emma Westwood, John Harrison, Sally Christie & Michael Helms, who all work off-scene in a number of fields ranging from film criticism to festival programming.

Join series creator, director and host Rob Taylor along with his crew Jarret Gahan & Ben Hellwig for the VIDEO HOARDERS – VHS SWAP MEET & SEASON 2 PREVIEW where you’ll have an opportunity to trade tapes, swap stories and get an exclusive first-look at episodes from the second season!
