Monster Giveaways / 02 September 2016

With Billy O'Brien's adaptation of Dan Wells' best-selling young adult novel in theaters this September, Monster invites you to create some YA fiction of your own - with the winner chosen by none other than Dan Wells himself.

Dan Wells’ I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER debuted in 2009, as the first in a series of young adult novels about sociopathic teenager John Wayne Cleaver. Since that time it has spawned four sequels and a fantastic feature film adaptation from Irish director Billy O’Brien, starring Max Records (WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE) as the homicidally-distressed anti-hero and budding mortician.

With Monster Pictures gearing up to release I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER theatrically this September starting September 29th (read the full press release HERE) we invite you to join the ranks of the YA fiction elite – whether your poison is the supernatural teen horror of Lois Duncan (STRANGER WITH MY FACE) or the angsty humour of Judy Blume (ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME MARGARET) – with your own slice of YA fiction on the theme of “Funeral Stories”.

Through Thursday September 15th at 5pm AEST, we will be accepting short fiction that is:

  • intended for a YA audience (though you do not have to be a young adult to participate!)
  • between 1000-1200 wds
  • on the theme of “Funeral Stories”

The entries will be vetted with the top ten being sent to I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER author Dan Wells himself, who will pick the winner on September 29th, 2016.

The winner will recieve:

  • their story read aloud by Dan Wells in a video that will be posted on the Monster Fest website
  • Two tickets to see I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER throughout its theatrical run in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane
  • A pass to the Swinburne University Media and Communication Monster Academy (the two-day industry symposium section of Monster Fest) on Nov 23 + 24, 2016
  • A DVD prize pack courtesy of Monster Pictures

To enter, just send your story embedded in an email to with the subject line “I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER Contest” and the text “I hereby consent to the terms and conditions”  no later than Thursday September 15th at 5:00pm AEST.
