Andrew Leavold’s PUB: THE MOVIE Headed On An Aussie Cinema Pub Crawl
Author, lecturer, film historian and filmmaker Andrew Leavold (THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG) returns with his latest feature, PUB: THE MOVIE, a documentary on beloved Australian music and art icon Fred Negro and following its world premiere at MIFF last year, it’s headed on ‘The Pub Crawl‘ through Australian Cinemas from February 16.
If you lived in inner city Melbourne during the 1980s and 1990s and frequented music venues such as the Esplanade Hotel and the Prince Of Wales, the name Fred Negro was omnipresent. For those that survived, the music, cartoons and good-natured notoriety of Fred is legendary.
A unique and brilliant graphic artist, Fred created the look of the St Kilda scene through his commercial art: handbills, posters and ads in the local street press. His “office”, the front bar of the Esplanade Hotel, was the centre of the music scene.
Fred’s output has remained largely a Melbourne phenomenon. Whilst much loved in his home town and sometimes referred to as the “unofficial mayor of St Kilda”, his longevity has seen him somewhat taken for granted.
Enter PUB: THE MOVIE. Combining interviews with luminaries of the St. Kilda music scene (Steve Lucas; X, Ross Knight; the Cosmic Psychos) and a treasure trove of Negro’s cartoons, music and humour, gonzo filmmaker, Andrew Leavold, brings the same eye for eccentricity and humanity he brought to the cult hit The Search for Weng Weng (2013) to tell the true story of Fred’s journey from shock-rock provocateur to loveable local hero.
PUB: THE MOVIE also features interviews with Bec Anthony (Kooky Karaoke co-compere, Little Freddie And The Pops), Lush Aston (The Twits, cartoonist), Joey Bedlam (Doll Squad), Mark Carson (I Spit On Your Gravy), Sam Crassweller (I Spit On Your Gravy), John Durr (The Editions), Paul Elliott (Gong Show, Gravies manager), Paul Fraser (artist, PUB collaborator), Vivienne Gay (The Hanks), Graham Hood (The Johnnys), Kaos (The Fuck Fucks), Ross Knight (Cosmic Psychos), Fiona Leonard (The Gong Show), Steve Lucas (X), Fiona Lee Maynard (Have A Nice Day, Dalicados), Phil “Pog” Miles (I Spit On Your Gravy, The Gravybilllys, The Band Who Shot Liberty Valance), Dave Moll (Shonkytonk, The Fuck Fucks, Black Molls), Dez Negro (Fred’s brother), Millie Negro (Fred’s daughter), Ross Negro (Fred’s brother), Elizabeth Reale (The Peptides, Piranhas In Love co-author), Matt Ryan (Munster Times, The Fierce Urgency Of Now), Sindy Virtue Van Eede (I Spit On Your Gravy), Melynda Von Wayward curator, punk historian), Clinton Walker (rock journalist and historian) and more.
